How to Check Filer Status in Pakistan (FBR IRIS Method)

How to Check Filer Status in Pakistan

A client called our office last month asking why his bank had deducted double the tax on a simple cash withdrawal. He’d filed a return two years ago and assumed that was enough to keep him on FBR’s good side. It wasn’t. His name had quietly dropped off the Active Taxpayer List, and nobody had told him.

That’s the thing about filer status — it’s not permanent, and it’s not always obvious when it changes. If you want to know exactly where you stand, you need to check filer status directly through FBR’s own system, not guess based on when you last filed a return.

This guide walks through what filer status actually means, why it affects almost every financial transaction you make in Pakistan, and the exact steps to check filer status using FBR’s IRIS portal.

What Does “Filer Status” Actually Mean?

In Pakistan’s tax system, being a “filer” isn’t the same as simply having a National Tax Number (NTN). A filer is someone whose name currently appears on the Active Taxpayer List (ATL) — the register FBR publishes of people and businesses who have filed their income tax return for the most recent tax year.

A “non-filer,” by contrast, is anyone who either hasn’t filed a return at all or has fallen off the ATL for some reason, even after filing in the past. This distinction matters more than most people realize, because withholding tax rates in Pakistan are structured around it. Filers pay a lower rate on property transactions, vehicle registration, banking transactions, and dividend income. Non-filers pay noticeably more on the exact same transaction.

Why You Should Check Filer Status Before Any Major Transaction

We tell every client the same thing: check filer status before you buy property, register a car, or move a large sum through your bank account, not after. A few situations where this catches people off guard:

  • Property purchases. Non-filer buyers face a steeper advance tax under Section 236K, and some registrars now flag the transaction if your CNIC doesn’t show up as active.
  • Bank transactions. Cash withdrawals above a certain threshold attract withholding tax that’s markedly higher for non-filers.
  • Vehicle registration. Token tax and transfer fees differ by filer status, sometimes by a wide margin on larger engine capacities.
  • Business contracts. Companies often ask vendors and contractors to confirm their filer status before releasing payment, since the withholding rate applied depends on it.

The ATL also gets refreshed on a schedule, meaning your status this month isn’t guaranteed to be your status next month if a return is delayed or a name gets flagged for review. That’s exactly why a quick verification habit saves people from unpleasant surprises at the bank counter.

How to Check Filer Status Through FBR IRIS

FBR’s IRIS portal is the official source for this information, and it’s free to use. Here’s how to check filer status through the Taxpayer Profile Inquiry option:

  1. Go to the official IRIS portal at https://iris.fbr.gov.pk/  Bookmark this — there are copycat sites that mimic FBR’s design, so always type the address directly rather than clicking a link from an SMS or email you didn’t expect.
  2. Locate the Taxpayer Profile Inquiry tab. You don’t need to log in with a password for a basic status check — this option is built specifically for public verification.
  3. Enter your CNIC or NTN number. Double-check the digits before submitting; a single typo will return a “no record found” result that has nothing to do with your actual status.
  4. Submit and review the result. The system will show your registration details and whether you currently appear on the Active Taxpayer List.

If your name doesn’t show as active and you know you’ve filed your return, don’t panic — it can take a few days for a recent filing to reflect on the ATL. If it’s been longer than that, something needs attention, and that’s usually where our office gets a call.

Other Ways to Check Filer Status

Checking Filer Status via SMS

If you don’t have easy access to a computer, or just want the fastest possible answer, the SMS method works from any basic mobile phone.

Step 1 — Open your messaging app.

Step 2 — Type your 13-digit CNIC number, without dashes, in the message body.

Step 3 — Send it to 9966, FBR’s official shortcode for ATL verification.

Step 4 — Wait for the reply. You’ll typically get a response within seconds confirming whether you’re an active taxpayer or not.

Why it’s useful: no internet required, works anywhere there’s mobile signal, and it’s usually free or charged at standard SMS rates depending on your network. For quick checks, this beats logging into a portal.

Tip: send it from the SIM registered against your own CNIC — results can be inconsistent otherwise.

Checking Filer Status with the Tax Asaan App

FBR also backs a mobile app, Tax Asaan, that bundles filer status checks along with other tax tasks like return filing and reminders.

Step 1 — Download the app from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store. Confirm it’s published by FBR or an authorized developer before installing.

Step 2 — Sign up or log in, entering your CNIC if it’s your first time using the app.

Step 3 — Find the Filer Status section in the main menu.

Step 4 — Enter your CNIC number and submit the request.

Step 5 — Review the result, which pulls live from FBR’s servers.

The app is a reasonable option if you’d rather manage your tax status from your phone without repeatedly opening a browser, and it doubles as a way to get filing reminders so you don’t miss the ATL deadline in the first place.

Checking Filer Status Using the ATL Excel List

FBR also publishes the full Active Taxpayer List as a downloadable Excel file, updated weekly. This method suits accountants, firms, or anyone who needs to verify several CNICs or NTNs at once rather than checking one at a time.

Step 1 — Download the file from the official FBR website or IRIS portal for the tax year you need.

Step 2 — Open it in Excel, Google Sheets, or a similar spreadsheet program.

Step 3 — Search for your CNIC using Ctrl+F (or Command+F on Mac), entered without dashes.

Step 4 — Check the result. If your CNIC shows up in the list, you’re an active filer for that year. If it doesn’t, you’re currently a non-filer.

This approach is more useful for bulk checking than for a single quick lookup, but it’s handy to keep on file if you’re managing tax records for a team or multiple clients.

IRIS Login vs. Public Taxpayer Profile Inquiry

It’s worth clearing up a common mix-up: you don’t need an IRIS account or password to check filer status. The Taxpayer Profile Inquiry section is public-facing and works with just your CNIC or NTN. Logging into a full IRIS account is only necessary when you’re filing a return, submitting a wealth statement, or reviewing your complete filing history.

What to Do If You’re a Non-Filer

If you check filer status and find you’re not on the list, the fix isn’t complicated, but it does need to be done correctly. Filing a return late, without addressing why you fell off the ATL in the first place, sometimes just repeats the same problem next year. At LAWBIZ Group, we usually walk clients through:

  • Reviewing what caused the gap — a missed return, an incomplete wealth statement, or a registration issue
  • Filing the outstanding return with FBR
  • Confirming the ATL update actually reflects the change before the client relies on it for a transaction

Frequently Asked Questions

How often does the Active Taxpayer List update?

FBR refreshes the ATL on a set schedule, generally on a weekly basis. A return filed today may take some time to appear, so re-check a few days later if your status doesn’t update immediately.

Can a company check its filer status the same way?

Yes. Companies and AOPs use the same Taxpayer Profile Inquiry on IRIS, entering their NTN instead of a personal CNIC.

Is there a fee to check filer status?

No. Verification through IRIS, SMS, or the ATL download is free. Fees only apply if you need professional help filing a return or resolving a registration issue.

What if I filed my return but I’m still showing as a non-filer?

This usually means either the return hasn’t finished processing, there’s a discrepancy in your submission, or the ATL simply hasn’t refreshed yet. If it persists beyond a couple of weeks, it’s worth having a tax consultant look at the filing directly.
